A Brief History

The story of Los Alamitos goes back to the mid 1800's, when ranches first started settling the area. Its emergence as a town started in 1896, when ex-Senator William Clark of Montana purchased 8,139 acres of land for raising sugar beets. Along with a sugar refinery, Clark overway the construction of housing and recreation facilities for workers. By 1921, Los Alamitos Boulevard was black-topped, making it the main thoroughfare. It remained a sleepy town until 1941, when the Navy set up training facilities, bringing in a surge of new settlers. Finally, on March 1, 1960 Los Alamitos officially became a chartered city.
