Northern Gateway

Standing at the northern gateway to Orange County's 42 mile coastal stretch, the quiet, unassuming city of Seal Beach charms with its down to earth ambiance. The city was named in honor of the seals that once frequented its beaches. Today, it is filled with quaint neighborhoods overflowing with hometown appeal. As the city increases in popularity, homes for sale in Seal Beach are trending up in price. However, with plenty of co-ops, apartment homes, and condos for sale, one can still find fairly affordable options.

History of Seal Beach

Initially, the area now known as Seal Beach was called 'Anaheim Landing', and served as a boat landing and seaside recreation area named after the nearby city of Anaheim. That site is now registered as a California Historical Landmark. By the 20th century, Anaheim Landing became Bay City. However, there was already a Bay City in Northern California. When the time to incorporate finally arrived in 1915, it was finally named 'Seal Beach'.

For the next several decades Seal Beach thrived as a recreation destination. As a matter of fact, it was the site for the area's first beach-side amusement park, known as The Joy Zone, and erected in 1916.

During World War II, the United States Navy's Naval Weapons Station Seal Beach was constructed for loading, unloading, and ammunition storage. Today, this facility serves as the primary source of munitions for a major part of the U.S. Pacific Fleet.

A Laid Back Beach Enclave

The Seal Beach of today is a placid residential community loved among locals and appreciated for its relaxed vibe.

Wide sandy beaches serve as great surf spots, and conditions are often ideal for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and other water-based recreation. Notably, it's home to the second longest pier in the state of California.

Meanwhile, its convenient location places it only 28 miles east of Los Angeles, between the popular cities Long Beach and Huntington Beach.

Another attractive feature of Seal Beach is the park system. As of May 2013, it encompasses the operation of 18 parks totaling 75.45 acres. Additionally, there are four community centers, one tennis center, a gymnasium, and an aquatics facility.

All these factors work together to make Seal Beach real estate a very attractive prospect, with homes for sale attracting diverse residents from many places and backgrounds.
